Why Social Work?
As I headed into my senior year, the prospect of deciding on a major loomed over me. Friends and family members assured me that I still had time. I was envious of the students who knew exactly what they wanted to do and where they wanted to go. In my search for an educational goal, I spent hours researching careers and taking interest inventories. My decision was confirmed one day while attending my sister’s graduation ceremony. She had attained her Masters in Social Work from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. During the ceremony, I remember quite clearly how the auditorium was filled with an overwhelming aura of service and dedication as John Legend’s If You’re Out There played harmoniously in the background. Watching the Social Work graduates, I greatly admired them, who at the time of an economic recession had chosen this noble profession. By the conclusion of the ceremony, my casual interest in social work had evolved into a strong aspiration. My innate passion for serving others would be a perfect fit for this career.
From that day I decided to pursue a Bachelors in Social Work, and then continue for a Masters specializing in community organizing and development, and possibly non-profit management. I chose Wayne over many schools not only because of the fact that the School of Social Work has a rich history of over 75 years of experience and service, but also because I wanted to stay close to my beloved hometown of Detroit. To me, it only made sense to live, study, and work in the very same city I planned to serve. Furthermore, what better university than Wayne State to provide me with this priceless opportunity, as it is located in the heart of Detroit. As a result of my social work education, I hope to gain a very broad and encompassing understanding of how I can effectively serve my community through numerous methods to promote its development and social welfare. I also hope to gain the ability to learn how I can help others whether individually or collectively to help themselves.
